This week’s update leads with something significant: Paizo has published a major statement about the company’s financial situation and the future of organized play. We’ve included it in full below, with context and a note from your RVC. Please read it.

On the gaming side, we have a strong week ahead β€” Sunday in Sandy Springs, Monday in Johns Creek, and a double-table Wednesday night at Manuel’s Tavern. We also have updates on the East Atlanta Comics venue fee and a note about scheduling practices we want to be transparent with you about.

And the clock on DragonCon keeps ticking. Read on.

🚨 Important News from Paizo

πŸ“£ Paizo Restructuring: A Difficult Update About Our Future

Posted by Jim Butler β€” June 8, 2026 | Read on Paizo.com

On June 8, Paizo CEO Jim Butler published a major statement about the company’s current financial situation, staffing changes, and the future of Pathfinder Society and Starfinder Society organized play. We are reprinting it here in full because every organized play participant deserves to read it directly, without summarization or spin.

Over the last year, Paizo has been navigating one of the most challenging periods in our company’s history. I want to speak to you directly about what happened, how it has affected us, and the steps we’re taking to protect the future of Pathfinder and Starfinder.

This is a hard update. But you deserve clarity, and we remain committed to being open with our community.

How We Got Here

In January of last year, our longtime book‑trade distributor, Diamond Comics, declared bankruptcy. Diamond handled Paizo products for major retailers like Amazon, Barnes & Noble, and Ingram, and our agreement with them was based on consignment (meaning we paid to ship products to their warehouse and were only paid when those products sold).

When Diamond collapsed, the situation became far more complicated:

  • JP Morgan Chase claimed a lien on all products stored in Diamond’s warehouse, including nearly $10 million in Paizo inventory. We cannot currently access this inventory, pending ongoing litigation.
  • Paizo and dozens of other publishers have been in court ever since, fighting to reclaim our own products.
  • Diamond’s exclusive contract prevented us from immediately moving to a new distributor, even after they stopped selling our books. A judge terminated that contract earlier this year, but Diamond has appealed, delaying resolution.

The result has been devastating. Paizo lost nearly $2 million last year, had to write off nearly half a million in additional sales covered by the bankruptcy, and book‑trade sales remain far below historical levels. While sales through Paizo.com and hobby retailers have grown over the same period, they have not been sufficient to offset these losses.

We are back in the book trade today with a new partner, but the book market has not yet recovered. We must make difficult decisions now.

Layoffs

As part of our efforts to address our core business and adapt to the current business environment, Paizo will be conducting layoffs impacting 12 employees.

Acknowledging that layoffs are sometimes necessary, Paizo management and the United Paizo Workers union established a clear, fair process for implementing layoffs. Following those terms:

  • Paizo has given the union twenty (20) business days’ notice of positions scheduled for reduction in force and may propose alternatives.
  • Employees may volunteer for layoffs; otherwise, the least‑senior employee in each impacted business unit is affected.
  • Impacted employees will receive one week of severance per year of service, with a minimum of two weeks.
  • Those affected will have 18‑month recall rights.

These decisions affect people we care about deeply. We are doing everything we can to support them through this transition.

Organized Play

Pathfinder Society and Starfinder Society have always been labors of loveβ€”programs we’ve supported as marketing investments to grow in‑person play at game stores and conventions. But the needs of retailers, conventions, and home groups have evolved over time, and the cost of producing scenarios has grown significantly.

It’s time to evolve Organized Play using a tool perfect for transitioning the campaigns to its dedicated players: the Pathfinder and Starfinder Infinite publishing programs.

Pathfinder Infinite & Starfinder Infinite

We will be releasing new logos and adding dedicated Infinite sections to the Paizo Store, bringing independently created Pathfinder and Starfinder products directly into the spotlight on Paizo.com.

Authors and members of the community interested in producing sanctioned independent adventure scenarios for use with the current Pathfinder Society and Starfinder Society programs will be able to do so under clear guidelines that we will release before Gen Con.

Official Scenarios

Paizo will continue publishing Pathfinder Society and Starfinder Society scenarios at the current rate as normal through October. After that, we will shift to two scenarios per monthβ€”one for Pathfinder Society and one for Starfinder Society. In addition to regular availability on Paizo.com, these monthly scenarios will be enhanced by our new Pathfinder Printables line of home-printed miniatures and will also appear as bonus content for subscribers to the Pathfinder Printables line on MyMiniFactory.com.

We also have two major Organized Play themed hardcovers coming early next year: The Chronicles of the Pathfinder Society Adventure Anthology (March) presents 6 classic Pathfinder Society scenarios in updated and expanded Second Edition rules, with all adventures sanctioned for current PFS play. The Starfinder Invasion’s Edge Adventure Path (April) collects more than a dozen popular scenarios from Starfinder Society’s debut season into an enhanced campaign you can play or replay as part of the Starfinder Society campaign.

We know Organized Play has seen a lot of changes recently and that some of these have been frustrating or disruptive to our Venture Officers and player community. It is our earnest desire to stabilize both programs and expand them from a position of strength, but right now things are not working, and we need to fix them. Paizo remains committed to Organized Play in the long run and will continue to invest substantially in these programs as we move forward.

Free PDFs

Beginning July 1, we will end the automatic granting of free PDFs of non-Society Paizo products to volunteers. Venture officers will continue to receive free access to Paizo-produced Society scenarios, including those yet to be released, as we evaluate our current free PDF policies. We may still offer selective grants to venture officers when this audit is concluded, but the volume of free products we’ve been distributing is no longer financially viable.

Foundry Support

We’ve invested heavily in Foundry VTT modules for Organized Play scenarios, but sales have not covered development costs. We will finish the current season, then pause VTT support for new Society modules until we can either reduce costs or increase revenue.

These changes are not a retreatβ€”Paizo believes strongly in the power of Organized Play and always will, but the current publishing model for Society scenarios is not working and we need to slow down, stem the financial losses from a struggling program and evaluate where to go from here.

What’s Next

Despite the challenges, there are real reasons for optimism in the medium term:

  • We’ve partnered with Independent Publishers Group to rebuild our book‑trade presence. Sales are still recovering, but we are in a better position than we were in 2025.
  • The new Paizo Store is performing better than the old store and will soon allow us to launch a direct‑to‑retail program, enabling local game stores to order directly from Paizoβ€”including a complete backlist catalog that has often been difficult to source through conventional channels. We expect your favorite local game store to be able to open a retailer account with Paizo in the next few months.

These measures will take time to bear fruit. The difficult decisions we’re making now will ensure Paizo can continue to thrive in 2026 and beyond.

To our customers, freelancers, partners, and volunteers: thank you. Your passion is the reason these worlds exist. We remain committed to the stories we’ve built together and to the people who bring them to life.

β€” Jim Butler

πŸ“Œ A Note from Your RVC

This is the complete, publicly available statement from Paizo as of this writing. We are sharing it in full because you deserve the full picture β€” not a summary, not a filtered version. We will continue to share further information as Paizo makes it publicly available.

A few things worth saying clearly:

Paizo is the victim here. Diamond Comics failed and left publishers β€” including Paizo β€” holding the bag on inventory they paid to produce and ship. JP Morgan Chase then claimed a lien on that inventory, locking nearly $10 million in Paizo product in legal limbo. Both Diamond and JPMorgan Chase bear responsibility for the damage done to Paizo and to the broader tabletop publishing ecosystem. That’s not spin β€” it’s what happened.

Speculation doesn’t help anyone. We know this news raises a lot of questions. We don’t have answers beyond what Jim Butler has shared above, and even if we did, Venture-Officers are not permitted to discuss non-public information with the broader community β€” nor should we. What we know is what you know. Speculation about what these changes “really mean” or what’s “actually going to happen” only creates anxiety and confusion in a community that is already processing difficult news. Please be kind to each other and to the program.

The single most impactful thing you can do right now is buy directly from Paizo. If you were going to buy a Pathfinder or Starfinder product anyway, buy it at paizo.com. Every direct sale has more impact on Paizo’s bottom line than a sale through a third-party retailer. If you love these games and this community, that’s the most concrete expression of support available to you right now.

For additional context on the Diamond bankruptcy situation and what it means for publishers like Paizo, community member Jeremiah (Baldur) shared this video in the GeorgiaPFS Discord β€” it’s from The Character Sheet on YouTube and provides helpful background: Watch on YouTube. Thanks to Jeremiah for surfacing it.

Please don’t despair. This news is hard. Some of it is genuinely painful β€” it’s now public knowledge, through posts on BlueSky and other social media by those affected, that some of the 12 employees being laid off are writers and developers who have contributed directly to the scenarios we play and love. Shay Snow and Ivis Flanagan are among those affected, and we want to acknowledge them by name. Their work has been at our tables, and that matters.

What we also want you to know is that Alex Speidel, Paizo’s Convention and Organized Play Manager, is doing everything within his power on our behalf. He is keeping Venture-Officers updated as information becomes available β€” including being clear with us about what can and cannot be publicly stated β€” and he is actively advocating internally to minimize the impact on Organized Play as much as the situation allows. The program will be impacted. We won’t pretend otherwise. But it is not being abandoned, and it has someone in its corner who is fighting for it.

We will keep you informed as Paizo shares more. Until then: roll dice, show up at the table, and support the game you love. βš”οΈ

πŸ“’ Current Announcements & Updates

πŸ“… June 2026 Organized Play Monthly Update

Alex Speidel has posted the June 2026 Organized Play Monthly Update. Key highlights:

New scenarios releasing July 1: Four new adventures will be available to run beginning July 1, 2026:

Sanctioning update β€” Troubles in Grayce: The Troubles in Grayce anthology has been sanctioned for Pathfinder Society credit, pairing nicely with the new Secrets of the Unlit Star Beginner Box.

Free RPG Day β€” June 27: Sanctioning is available now for the Free RPG Day Pathfinder adventure Things Go to Hell (download here). The Starfinder adventure Rescue on Raxil uses the generic Starfinder sanctioning document. Both adventures may be run for credit on June 27 only, then must wait until July 27 for general use.

Rules changes coming July 16: Paizo has announced that on July 16, they will publish their annual blog detailing upcoming rule changes for both Pathfinder Society and Starfinder Society β€” described as a significant update that will bring the two programs’ rulesets more in line with each other. All changes take effect July 30 at Gen Con. Watch paizo.com/blog on July 16 for the full details. We’ll share and discuss once it’s public.

🌐 Atlanta Lodge Virtual Games – What’s Changing

The VOs who have been running virtual games through the Atlanta lodge are wrapping up their remaining sessions and moving their ongoing presence to the official Organized Play Online Region. If you’ve been playing in those games, the Online Region is a great place to continue β€” here’s a temp link to their Discord: https://discord.gg/8RY8D7V59. Any questions, reach out to James R.

Virtual play through Atlanta isn’t going away, though. The ongoing Murder in Metal City campaign continues on Foundry, and Fantasy Grounds Starfinder Society games are returning to the lodge soon β€” watch the GeorgiaPFS Discord and Warhorn for scheduling announcements.

This has no impact on the Columbus lodge’s virtual offerings. Columbus virtual games continue as normal through the shared Warhorn event page.

πŸ“œ Organized Play Sanctioning Update – May 2026 Recap

In case you missed the May Organized Play Monthly Update, Paizo made some significant sanctioning announcements worth knowing about:

Starfinder Society: A generic adventure sanctioning document is now available, covering player and GM credit for any Paizo-published Starfinder adventure unless otherwise stated.

Pathfinder Society: Sanctioning documents are now available for the Hellbreakers Adventure Path, the Season of Ghosts compilation, Secrets of the Unlit Star, and Paizo Printables adventures. All are repeatable, and Paizo has indicated repeatable will be the standard going forward.

πŸ³οΈβ€πŸŒˆ Happy Pride Month from AtlantaPFS!

June is Pride Month, and we want to say clearly and without qualification: LGBTQ+ players, GMs, and community members are welcome at our tables. Pathfinder and Starfinder Society organized play has always been a space for everyone, and that’s something we’re proud to uphold here in Atlanta and across the Appalachian Region.

Whether you’re joining us for the first time this month or you’ve been rolling dice with us for years β€” we’re glad you’re here. πŸ³οΈβ€πŸŒˆβš”οΈ

πŸ“ Venue Update: East Atlanta Comics Dice City Entry Fee

Please note that the per-person table fee at East Atlanta Comics Dice City in Atlanta is $10 per person. Plan accordingly when attending events at this venue. We appreciate their continued support of organized play in the Atlanta area.

πŸ‰ DragonCon 2026 – We Need You. Now.

DragonCon 2026: September 3–7, 2026 β€” Labor Day Weekend, Atlanta, GA

Under 90 days. That’s where we are. And we are still short on volunteers.

Let’s be direct: every unfilled GM slot is a table that doesn’t happen. Every HQ position that stays empty means more pressure on the people who do show up. The cinematic run of The Battle of Hellknight Hill, our regular PF2 and SF2 tables, the whole operation β€” it runs on people who commit early and follow through.

That person is you. Here’s what we need:

  • GMs β€” for regular scenarios, the Battle of Hellknight Hill special, and everything in between
  • HQ Staff β€” the backbone of the operation; without you, nothing else works
  • Anyone who can give even one or two slots of their DragonCon weekend β€” every commitment counts

The form takes five minutes. We are asking you, personally, to fill it out today.

πŸ•ŠοΈ In Memoriam: Lee McLurkin

We continue to hold space for the memory of Lee McLurkin, whose loss touched so many in our community. A fitting tribute is being prepared for DragonCon later this year, and a memorial will be added to our Hall of Heroes once complete. Our thoughts remain with his family and all who knew him.

πŸ† Hall of Heroes

Visit our Hall of Heroes page to honor those we’ve lost from our gaming community.

🎬 Rocky Horror Picture Show Night – Poll Still Open!

We’re still collecting availability for our AtlantaPFS outing to The Rocky Horror Picture Show at The Plaza Theatre on Ponce de Leon Avenue. If you haven’t filled out the poll yet, please do β€” more responses means a better date for everyone. We’re personally leaning toward October once the dust from DragonCon has settled, but all input is welcome.

WhenIsGood: AtlantaPFS Invades the Rocky Horror Picture Show

This social event is open to the wider GeorgiaPFS and Appalachian Region community. Costumes and callbacks are strongly encouraged.

πŸŽ‰ Morgantown, WV Lodge – Building Momentum and Heading to CharCon!

The Morgantown, West Virginia lodge reopening is gaining real momentum. Learn to Play sessions wrapped up in May, and the lodge is now into scheduled Pathfinder and Starfinder Society sessions at Wyvern’s Wargames. (We had the venue name listed incorrectly in previous updates as Wyvern’s Rest β€” we apologize for the error and have corrected it here.)

Exciting news: the Morgantown lodge will be participating in CharCon β€” July 10–12 at the Clay Center for the Arts & Sciences in Charleston, WV. If you’re in or near the Charleston area that weekend and want to help support organized play at CharCon, we’d love to have you. Reach out to Joel H or through the GeorgiaPFS Discord if you can volunteer.

Urgent: Venture-Officer Openings in Chattanooga & Charleston, WV

Two important leadership needs remain open:

  • Chattanooga, TN: The Venture-Lieutenant overseeing the Chattanooga lodge has stepped down. The lodge has great bones and a real player community β€” it needs a dedicated VO to keep the momentum going.
  • Charleston, WV: We are actively recruiting to establish a brand-new lodge in the Charleston area. Help build something new and be the reason a whole community of players finds organized play.

Interested in either opportunity? Reach out through the GeorgiaPFS Discord or at rvcapparegionop@gmail.com.

We Need Players and GMs β€” Especially Here

A few lodges are in particular need of additional support right now:

  • Mebane, NC – Tables are running but could use more consistent turnout and GMing support.
  • Charlotte, NC – A major metro area that deserves more organized play presence.
  • Memphis, TN – Western Tennessee organized play needs both players and GMs to stay visible.
  • Nashville, TN – Strong potential, needs more regular GM support to grow the schedule.

This week carries more weight than most. The news from Paizo is significant, and it’s okay to sit with that for a minute. Show up this week. Play some Pathfinder. If you can, buy something directly from Paizo. And if you haven’t yet, sign up to volunteer for DragonCon β€” we need you there.

Watch the GeorgiaPFS Discord and the Warhorn agenda for additions and changes throughout the week. Roll well, friends β€” we’ll see you out there. βš”οΈπŸŒŸ
