In the world of Organized Play, both Session 0 and Slot 0 events play crucial roles in enhancing the player and volunteer experience, but they serve very different purposes. Here’s a breakdown to help differentiate between the two:
Session 0
A Session 0 event is a pre-adventure meeting held before an actual gaming session starts. These are typically open to the public and are designed to help players prepare for the upcoming adventure. During a Session 0, the GM will:
- Go over game rules
- Answer questions
- Assist with character creation
These sessions are great for newcomers or players looking to get organized and ready before the adventure officially begins.
Slot 0
On the other hand, a Slot 0 event is an exclusive, pre-convention game session designed specifically for convention volunteers. These events are not open to the general public. Instead, they give volunteers—who will be running games during the convention—the opportunity to experience the adventures firsthand. This includes playing interactive specials or other scenarios they will be overseeing. It’s a closed session intended to ensure volunteers are familiar with the material before they run it for others.
By offering both Session 0 and Slot 0 events, we aim to create a more prepared, organized, and enjoyable gaming experience for everyone involved—whether you’re new to the game or a seasoned volunteer!
